High School Roundup: Sage Hill upsets Mater Dei

The Sage Hill School girls’ volleyball team bounced back in a big way from its season-opening loss at Windward with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-19 victory over Mater Dei Friday at Sage Hill.

The Monarchs entered ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA preseason poll.

“We never really got in a groove in Windward in L.A.,” Sage Hill Coach Dan Thomassen said. “The girls were very motivated to turn it around quickly. Our seniors really took leadership. They had the right mentality and they were really focused. They realized this opporutnity doesn’t come around often and they made the most of it.”

Thomassen said the atmosphere was great in the Peter Ueberroth gym, better known as, “The Uebe.”

Kekai Whitford had 16 kills and four aces for the Lightning (1-1), the defending Division 3A champion. Halland McKenna added 20 digs, eight kills and four aces, Sophia Mossman had six kills and two blocks, and Maddy Abbott had 29 assists and three aces.

Sage Hill plays at Santa Margarita on Tuesday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Yorba Linda 11, Costa Mesa 5

Matt Brown and Quinn Smith had two goals each for the Mustangs in their season opener at home Friday.

Freshman Augie Cunningham scored one goal for Mesa.
