LOS ANGELES — Senior outside hitter Kekai Whitford recorded 20 kills and four service aces for the Lightning in a season opener that host Los Angeles Windward won 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, on Wednesday.

Halland McKenna produced 10 kills and five aces against Windward, the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA runner-up last season, while Sophia Mossman totaled seven kills for Sage Hill, the defending Division 3A champion.

Jade Blevins had six kills and three blocks, and Jamie Dailey added six kills.

Sage Hill plays host to Mater Dei, ranked No. 2 in the Division 1AA preseason poll, on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Newport Harbor 232, El Toro 266

Sailors junior Grace Ferrell earned medalist honors for the second straight match, this time sharing the top spot after she shot one-over-par 37 in the nonleague match Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Ferrell shared medalist with El Toro’s Sharon Oh.

Tehya Corona (43), Madison Fernandez (46), Teanna Herrera (52) and Jaci DeFeo (54) also scored for Newport Harbor (2-0).

Ferrell collected four birdies on her way to a two-under-par 34 score to become medalist at Yorba Linda Country Club, where the Sailors beat Esperanza, 231-282, Tuesday.

Corona (45), Fernandez (46), DeFeo (53) and Herrera (53) also scored for Newport Harbor.

Alyaa Abdulghany shot one-under-par 34 with two birdies to earn medalist honors during the Sea Kings’ season opener Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Gabby Finear shot 42 and Lauren Nakamura finished at 48 for CdM.
