Briefs: Locals wins AVP crown

CHICACO — Costa Mesa resident Brad Keenan and Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie teamed to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Chicago Open beach volleyball tournament completed Sunday.

Keenan and Tramblie, the No. 3 seed, took down top-seeded Ryan Doherty and John Mayer, 21-19, 22-20, in a 54-minute final on Sunday.

Keenan and Tramblie beat Casey Jennings and Billy Kolinske, 21-14, 19-21, 15-10, in the semifinals.

It was the first AVP title for Tramblie, 34, whose previous best finish was third this year.

It was the second AVP crown won by Keenan, who won his first in 2014.

The locals split $15,000.

The AVP hosts the Cincinnati Open, which runs Friday through Sunday in Mason, Ohio.

Ross, partner fifth

OLSZTYN, Poland — Costa Mesa resident April Ross and her partner, Kerri Walsh Jennings, were upset in the quarterfinals on Friday and shared fifth place at the Federation Internationale de Volleyball Grand Slam beach volleyball tournament.

Ross and Walsh Jennings, seeded No. 10, fell to No. 29-seeded Sophie van Gestel and Jantine van der Vlist of the Netherlands, 15-21, 21-14, 15-8, in the quarterfinals, after winning four of their first five matches in the tournament.

They were defeated in pool play by No. 7-seeded Madelein Meppelink and Marleen Van Leisel of the Netherlands.

Costa Mesa resident Jennifer Fopma, playing with Brittany Hochevar, finished 1-2 and did not advance out of their pool.

The FIVB tour continues with the Rio Open in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, beginning Tuesday and continuing through Sunday.
