Seahawks drop Fells

Darren Fells, a former UC Irvine men’s basketball player attempting to make the Seattle Seahawks as a tight end, was waived by the football team Saturday.

Fells caught two passes for 22 yards in the preseason for the Seahawks, who signed him to a three-year contract for $495,000 in March. He was released by the team in May, but Seattle signed him 12 days later. But the 6-foot-7, 275-pounder, who last played football at Fullerton High, could not make the team.

Fells, a second-team All-Big West Conference performer as a senior in 2006-07 at UCI, played four seasons of professional basketball in Europe, Mexico and Argentina.

Fells’ younger brother Daniel, a six-year NFL veteran tight end, was released by the New England Patriots on Friday.
