College Roundup: UCI women’s volleyball opens season with win

UC Irvine def. Texas A&M Corpus Christi

DENVER — Freshman outside hitter Cassidy Pickrell had 12 kills and four block assists to help the Anteaters open their season well at the Pioneer Classic at the University of Denver on Friday.

Pickrell hit .310, while Marisa Bubica added 10 kills and Arielle Manz had five kills, hit .444 and had six block assists and one solo block for the winners.

Newport Harbor High product Mackenzi Campbell had 21 assists for UCI, which concludes the tournament Saturday against Air Force and host Denver.

IRVINE — Jessica Neves had a match-best 16 kills and 27 assists and Kelly Heenan had 32 digs to lead the Lions in the opener of the Concordia Labor Day Festival on Friday at Concordia University.

Myranda Cunningham added 28 assists and Sarah McKinny had 10 kills for the winners (3-2).

Vanguard plays Montana Western and Cornerstone University in tournament action on Saturday.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 1, Marist 0

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Enrique Cardenas scored on an assist from Mitchell Alvarez in the 77th minute in the nonconference season opener on Friday at UCI.

UCI posted a 13-3 advantage in shots as goalkeeper Michael Breslin made just one save to preserve the shutout.

UCI plays host to Iona on Sunday at 2 p.m.

SAN DIEGO — The host Toreros scored in the 65th minute of the nonconference match on Friday.

UCI posted a 6-4 advantage on shots, but fell to 1-2.

USD is 2-1.
