RIVERSIDE — Senior Andrew Sullivan, sophomore Luke Kadillak and junior Jesus Fregoso posted a goal apiece in the Lions’ season opener Wednesday.

Sophomore Luca Licciardi collected the win in goal, earning the combined shutout (with freshman Austin Neil) after tallying four saves in just over 80 minutes of play.

“Our back line played confident and decisive tonight,” Licciardi said. “We absorbed their pressure and played clean out of the back. It didn’t start with our back line though, our pressure up top set the pace through the midfield and allowed our back line to stay in great defending shape. This was a fantastic team win for us.”

Kadillak came off of the bench at the 35:15 mark and wasted no time, putting his squad on the scoreboard five minutes later when he headed freshman teammate Brian Way’s pass into the back of the net to give VU a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.

In the second period, Way came up with another assist, this time facilitating Sullivan’s goal at 72:51 off of a corner to extend the Lions’ lead to 2-0.

With just 1:21 remaining in the match, a pair of newcomers tacked on another for Vanguard to make it 3-0, as freshman Samuel Nicanor assisted Fregoso’s first career goal at Vanguard.

La Sierra out-shot the Lions 15-10 in the contest but VU matched the Golden Eagles’ six shots on goal and was able to convert when it counted to obtain the victory.

Vanguard will play at Marymount College next. The game will be held at Long Beach City College on Sept. at 4 p.m.
