Briefs: Musselman, Whitelegge each score twice in victory

Corona del Mar High incoming sophomore Maddie Musselman and Newport Harbor incoming junior Rachel Whitelegge each scored twice Wednesday, helping the United States Women’s Youth National water polo team defeat Brazil, 11-6, at the UANA Youth Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Carlee Kapana, another incoming junior at Harbor, went the distance in goal for Team USA.

The United States team improved to 4-0 at the tournament. The squad also features Newport Beach resident Brianna Daboub, who is an incoming senior at Mater Dei.

Musselman, who is the second-youngest player on the team, has tallied nine goals in the tournament.

Team USA will play host Argentina at 1 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday. The semifinals and championship match are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Anteaters shine

Connor Spencer and Elliot Surrey topped UC Irvine baseball players recognized for strong showings in their respective summer leagues.

Spencer, a first baseman for the Wenatchee (Wash.) AppleSox, hit .380 to earn a spot on the West Coast League’s North All-Star team. Spencer, who led UCI with a .373 average as a sophomore in 2013, had 70 hits in 44 games this summer, including four home runs and 15 doubles. He drove in 38 runs.

Surrey, a left-handed pitcher, earned first-team All-WCL recognition and the Top Pitcher Award for the Corvallis Knights. He was 5-1 in the regular season and won his only playoff start. He threw 56 2/3 innings over 11 appearances and struck out 35. Surrey will be a sophomore for the Anteaters next season.

Chris Rabago, who will be junior at UCI in 2014, earned the Knights’ Joe Segal Hustle Award for the second straight year. Catching and playing shortstop, Rabago had 17 RBIs, 32 hits and 19 runs to help Corvallis win the league title with a 37-17 record. He hit .222 with one home run.

Renae Martinez, who redshirted as a freshman at UCI in 2013, hit .308 for the Walla Walla (Wash.) Sweets of the West Coast League. A catcher, he made the North All-Star team and earned honorable mention in the all-league voting. He had 36 hits in 32 games, including two home runs and four doubles. He drove in 14 runs and scored 14.

Justin Castro, who will be a junior in 2014 for the ‘Eaters, represented the Neptune Beach Pearls in the Far West League All-Star Game this summer. The infielder hit .305 with 32 hits, five doubles and 14 RBIs.
