Briefs: Mikulak retains crown

Corona del Mar High product Sam Mikulak won his second consecutive men’s all-around title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, completed Sunday in Pittsburgh.

Mikulak finished with 180.65 points, edging first-day leader John Orozco (180.2).

Mikulak’s 2012 Olympic teammate, Jake Dalton, was third with 179.85 points.

Dalton led going into the final rotation. But Mikulak, a 21-year-old who won the NCAA team and all-around titles in April as a University of Michigan senior, rallied to win by recording a score of 14.95 on his final event, the vault.

Mikulak was in fourth place after the first day of the two-day event. In Sunday’s final round, he scored a 15.45 on the parallel bars to win that event.

He then scored a 15.65 in the floor exercise and a 15.45 on the pommel horse to move to second place. He posted 14.95 on still rings.

Mikulak, who grew up in Newport Coast and is a three-time NCAA individual all-around champion, will now prepare for the world championships, Oct. 3-13 in Nanning, China.

DuBois qualifies

LA JOLLA — Don DuBois. a member of Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, shot one-over-par 73 on Monday to qualify for the 60th annual United States Golf Assn. Senior Amateur Championship, scheduled Sept. 13-18 at Big Canyon.

DuBois shared second place with three others to advance at the sectional qualifier at La Jolla Country Club, three strokes back of John Schaller of Scottsdale, Ariz.

DuBois was one of five to advance.

“It’s a great feeling,” DuBois told the Southern California Golf Assn. website. “It was a little stressful [on Monday], the course played tough, but it’ll be a lot of fun to play in a USGA event on my home course.”

Big Canyon members Steve Collins, James Held, Mike Moorhead, Jim Morris, Gary Singer and Todd Palmaer failed to qualify at the sectional.

Two locals shine

Corona del Mar High incoming junior Maddie Musselman scored three goals and Newport Harbor incoming senior Carlee Kapana made four saves as the U.S. women’s water polo youth national team beat South Africa, 20-4, on Tuesday at the FINA Youth World Championships in Madrid, Spain.

Kapana played just the first half in goal. Second-half goalie Helena Van Brande made five saves. Devin Grab led all scorers with five goals.

Brianna Daboub, a Newport Beach resident and Mater Dei High graduate who is bound for USC, also contributed for Team USA.

The Americans opened the tournament Monday with a 14-9 win over Hungary. Musselman scored twice and Kapana played the whole game in cage, making 14 saves.

Team USA concludes group play against Germany on Wednesday.
