Blues sign Mundine, a special fan

The Orange County Blues FC signed Evan Mundine, a 17-year-old who has been battling severe Crohn’s disease, to a one-day contract.

Mundine, a Blues fan since the club’s inaugural season in 2011, was expected to be a part of Orange County’s United Soccer League match against the Austin Aztex on Saturday at Kelley Reeves Athletic Complex, an hour’s drive from Mundine’s home in Bastrop, Texas.

The Blues gave Mundine a No. 15 jersey. All season, he has been tweeting Orange County’s coaching staff and players under his @bilzy Twitter handle, offering support whether the club wins, loses or ties.

At the start of Orange County’s season, Mundine mailed a key to each Blues player and coach with the word “BELIEVE” inscribed on it.

“We are honored to add Evan to our roster as his life story and love for the OC Blues is a true inspiration to the entire organization,” Blues Coach Oliver Wyss said in a press release. “His determination, spirit and positive attitude to overcome his daily struggles provide us with a remarkable role model.”
