Briefs: Hagger to play at Hawaii

Davasyia Hagger, an All-Orange Empire Conference performer in football and basketball as a freshman at Orange Coast College, will play football at the University of Hawaii this fall.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound product of Beverton High in Oregon, who began his football career as a perferred walk-on at the University of Oregon in 2013, is a redshirt sophomore tight end for the Raibow Warriors

He made 43 receptions for 620 yards at OCC in 2014, then averaged 14.1 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots for Coach Steve Spencer’s basketball squad.

The UC Irvine men’s soccer team was picked to win the four-team Big West Conference South Division in a preseason poll of coaches announced Tuesday.

The Anteaters, coming off back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, received 26 points and five of eight first-place votes.

‘Eaters midfielders Lalo Calzado and Mats Bjurman, as well as junior Michael Sperber, were named to the preseason all-conference team.

Cal State Northridge ranks second in the South Division with 22 points and two first-place votes.

Cal State Fullerton, last year’s conference tournament champion, has 20 points and one first-place vote.

UC Riverside, the South Division champion in 2014, has 12 points.

UC Santa Barbara was picked to win the North Division.

UCI, ranked No. 20 in the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America preseason poll, opens the season Aug. 28 at home against Loyola of Chicago.

UCI’s Young sparkles

UC Irvine men’s basketball standout Alex Young helped lead the Great Britain senior team to a 76-66 win over Portugal at the KIA Autohaag Classic in Leiden, Netherlands on Saturday.

Young, who will be a senior next season, scored a game-high 16 points and added seven rebounds and one assist in the team’s final game of the summer.

Young had a game-high five assists along with two rebounds and one point in a 69-63 loss to the Netherlands Friday.

Young, who averaged 9.4 points and 3.6 assists for the Anteaters last season, ranks third in the UCI record book with 414 career assists and eighth with 104 steals.
