Girls’ Volleyball: Sage Hill wins Hawaii tournament

The Sage Hill School girls’ volleyball team traveled to Hawaii to play in the fifth annual Kamehameha Maui Invitational.

The team wound up facing an Orange County school in the championship.

Sage Hill swept Edison, 25-20, 25-23, in the best-of-three final to claim the top bracket, the Ikaika Division, on Saturday.

Senior outside hitters Kekai Whitford and Halland McKenna, and senior setter Maddy Abbott led Sage Hill, which finished 8-0 during the three-day tournament. Sage Hill placed fourth at the tournament three years ago.

Whitford, bound for Loyola Marymount, totaled 86 kills, and McKenna, a Stanford commit, had 67 kills during the tournament. Abbott amassed 177 assists and 12 service aces.

Sage Hill begins the season on the mainland on Sept. 3, when it travels to Los Angeles Windward, the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA runner-up last season. A year ago, Sage Hill won the CIF Southern Section Division 3A championship, its third section title, and advanced to the CIF State Southern California Regional Division III championship match for the first time.
