Briefs: Blues sign Estrada

The Orange County Blues FC signed forward David Estrada, a former Major League Soccer player with the Seattle Sounders and D.C United.

Estrada started 17 of the 18 matches he played with the Sacramento Republic FC this season, recording three goals and three assists in the United Soccer League.

Estrada was the 11th overall pick by the Sounders in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft.

“We feel very fortunate to add a player of David’s quality to our already talented roster,” said Oliver Wyss, Orange County’s coach and general manager, in a press release. “He is a first class character [and] professional who has played on the highest level and his addition will make us a better team.”

Blues’ Navarro, Miranda earn honors

Orange County Blues FC defender Alberto Navarro is on the United Soccer League’s Team of the Week after helping the Blues shut out Arizona United SC, 3-0, on Saturday.

Goalkeeper Pepe Miranda made the Team of the Week Bench after finishing with three saves.

With six matches left in the regular season, the Blues (11-8-3, 22 points) hold the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Orange County plays at the Austin Aztex on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Robinson memorial

Zach “Whammer” Robinson, a charismatic figure on UC Irvine’s 2007 College World Series baseball team, died in his sleep Aug. 10 in San Diego.

He was 29.

Robinson, known for orchestrating a series of dugout cheering gestures during the Anteaters’ run to Omaha, played one season at UCI after earning NAIA All-American honors at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.

Robinson, a burley first baseman and designated hitter, had 16 hits and eight runs batted in in 2007, when he batted .276 in 32 games.

A beloved figure among his teammates and a fan favorite while at UCI, Robinson was president of Continental Environmental Solutions Inc., which he founded with his brothers Quincy and George.

A memorial service is scheduled Saturday at 10 a.m. at North Chapel, 2881 Roosevelt Road in San Diego.
