The Newport-Mesa boys’ 14 team coached by Damien O’Brien won the Pyramid Cup in Long Beach recently.

The Newport-Mesa boys won the title with a dominating defense shutting out all three teams they faced. The team was led by goalie Emilio Carbajal. The defense included Liam Rosten, Evan Gonzalez, Fernando Melchor, Kyle Schaal, Hector Ricardo, Alan Morales and Sam Quattrociocchi.

The defensive group helped Carbajal make only two saves in the first game, a 1-0 win over Legends FC. The win was Newport’s hardest game of the tournament as the offense found its way in the following games.

The second match was more of the same as Ceres Earthquakes only managed two shots on goal as Newport won, 7-0.
