Boys’ Water Polo: Robert Lynn steps down as Newport Harbor HS coach

Share

Robert Lynn resigned as boys’ water polo coach at Newport Harbor High on Friday, Principal Sean Boulton said Monday night.

It is not known why Lynn stepped down. He has yet to respond to voice and text messages.

“We can’t talk about personnel issues,” said Boulton, noting the new hire will come relatively quick with the season approaching. “We are moving forward on the aquatics front. We have to find someone high caliber and move things forward.”

Lynn, who coached the Sailors three seasons, stopped coaching for Newport Beach Water Polo Club last month. He had been the technical director and head coach of the club since it was formed in 2011. The NBWPC board of directors sent an email saying he would no longer be the club coach, but did not state the reason.

Lynn, a two-time U.S. Olympic men’s water polo assistant coach who also played in the Olympics, went 69-14 as the Sailors coach. Newport Harbor reached the CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals last year for the second time in the three seasons. He did not teach at NHHS. He was also the boys’ swim coach.

Recently, the Newport Beach Water Polo club’s 12U boys’ team finished third in the platinum division at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympic Championships, a sign that the future appears strong at NHHS for boys’ water polo.

Lynn stopped coaching NBWP just before the California State High School Championships and shortly after a European team trip.
