Briefs: Robles in U-20 event

UC Irvine junior Clarissa Robles will compete for Mexico’s women’s national under-20 team in the U20 World Cup in Canada, beginning Aug. 6.

Robles played in 32 matches the last two seasons for the Anteaters, spending time at forward, midfielder and defender. She has one assist as a collegian.

Mexico faces Nigeria in the opener in Moncton, New Brunswick. Robles’ squad meets England on Aug. 8 and faces South Korea on Aug. 13 in Toronto. The knockout rounds run Aug. 17-24.

“It’s a great opportunity for Clarissa,” UCI Coach Scott Juniper said. “She has grown a lot here and it will be fun to watch her do her thing on the big stage and then bring that back here and have that caliber of player on the squad when the season gets going.”

UCI begins its season Aug. 22 at Santa Clara.

NHBA bows out at Super Region

The Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. 12-and-under Bronco All-Star team lost to North City, 3-1, ending its run in the Pony Southern California Super Region tournament on Sunday.

Newport Harbor played three games in the double-elimination tournament, with its only win coming in a 7-3 decision against Toluca.

In Newport Harbor’s final game, Simon Copeman went two for four, and Clay Liolios, Kyle Binford and Trey Genova each had a hit. Braham Duncan drove in Newport Harbor’s lone run.
