Briefs: Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center to host nation’s top swimmers

The William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine is playing host to the Speedo Junior National Championships from July 30 to Aug. 3, and the Phillips 66 National Championships from Aug. 6-10.

Swimmers will compete for spots on the U.S. team roster for the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships and Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

Pelican Hill Golf Club is offering autumn instruction programs starting in October.

The instruction programs include the two-day weekend golf school, the one-day short game scoring school, the half-day lower your scores schools that deal with putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play, full swing, and playing school, an adult and junior golf offer, a total golf game evaluation with teacher Glenn Deck, and the full swing school.

U.S. Open of Surfing returns

The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing returns to the Huntington Beach Pier July 26.

The world’s best surfing, skateboarding and BMX comes to Huntington Beach, which is celebrating 100 Years of Surfing for the competition, which runs through Aug. 3.

The event will feature Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP) men’s and women’s competitions, the Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational and Van Doren Invitational Skate and BMX contests as well as family activities including movie nights and art exhibitions.

Lifeguard competition

The top lifeguards in the state will compete in the 2014 California Surf Life Saving Championships and California Junior Lifeguard Championships July 25-26 in Huntington Beach.

The event, which will showcase competition between Junior Lifeguards from across the state July 25 and adult Ocean Lifeguards July 26, will be held at Huntington State Beach at Newland Street, between lifeguard towers 13 and 14.
