Locals named to national teams

Goalkeeper Carlee Kapana, Maddie Musselman, Rachael Whitelegge and Brianna Daboub are local players who were named to the women’s 17U roster for the 2013 UANA Pan American Youth Water Polo Championships.

The team, coached by Natalie Benson, will compete in the PanAm championships Aug. 23 through Sept. 1 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Carlee Kapana is an incoming junior at Newport Harbor High. She was on the national team that finished fourth at the inaugural FINA Youth World Championships in Perth, Australia in December.

Musselman is a rising attacker who will be a sophomore at Corona del Mar.

Whitelegge, who will be a Newport Harbor junior, earned All-CIF Southern Section third-team honors as a sophomore. She was also an All-Sunset League second teamer.

Daboub, a Newport Beach resident, plays for Mater Dei.

UCI duo named to U.S. women’s junior roster

USA Water Polo has released the Junior World Championship rosters which included two UC Irvine names, Jillian Yocum and McKenna Mitchell.

The Junior National Team is head coached by UC Irvine head coach Dan Klatt who will captain the squad in Volos, Greece for the FINA Women’s Junior World Championship taking place from Aug. 18-24. The sophomore goalkeeper Yocum is one of only three players to make the initial roster from outside the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Freshman center Mitchell was named an alternate for the squad.

The U.S. will play Kazakhstan, Italy, and New Zealand in group play before the knockout stages get underway. The full draw and schedule can be found at fina.org.
