HOUSTON — Ryan Moss and Matt Ctvrtlik highlight two of seven Corona del Mar High players leading the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club Asics boys' team to the silver medal in the 17-and-under open division at the USA Junior National Championships last week.

Moss and Ctvrtlik, a future senior and junior, were joined on the Balboa Bay team by CdM incoming seniors Augie Miller, Kevin Fults, Max Pearson and Finn Jeffrey, and incoming junior Mika Grasso. CdM Coach Steve Astor guided Balboa Bay.

Balboa Bay won its 10 first matches, before losing in the best-of-three final that Pacific Rim, from the San Francisco Bay area, won, 25-20, 25-20.

"We are disappointed not to win the gold medal, but I'm proud of how hard our team worked all year and how we came together when it mattered most," Moss said. "To finish second in the country in the 17s is something we can all be proud of and look forward to coming back stronger next year and winning the gold."

Moss, an outside hitter who's committed to USC, and Matt Ctvrtlik, a setter, earned all-tournament honors.

During the high school season in the spring, the duo helped CdM (30-3) win a CIF Southern California Regional Division II title, along with a Pacific Coast League crown.
