Briefs: Ross, Walsh Jennings win again

April Ross, a former Newport Harbor High standout, teamed up with Kerri Walsh Jennings to win the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Milwaukee Open, beating Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat, 15-21, 21-16, 15-13, in the women’s final on Saturday.

Ross and Walsh have claimed five titles this season, two on the AVP tour and three in FIVB competition. The duo earned $15,000 for the victory.

Whitney Pavlik, a former UC Irvine standout, and Jennifer Fopma took third.

On the men’s side, Jake Gibb, a Costa Mesa resident, and Casey Patterson were the No. 1 seed and the duo placed third at the Milwaukee Open.

Costa Mesa resident Brad Keenan, and John Mayer, the No. 3 seed, finished seventh.

Ty Tramblie, a Newport Harbor graduate, and Avery Drost were 17th.

Kapana, Daboub in action at Pan-Am Games

Incoming Newport Harbor High senior Carlee Kapana and Newport Beach resident Brianna Daboub are competing for Team USA at the UANA Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships, which begin for the hosts Wednesday at Riverside City College.

Kapana is a goalkeeper while Daboub, a recent Mater Dei High graduate, is bound for UCLA. They are part of the 13-player women’s roster which will be coached by Laguna Beach High Coach Ethan Damato. The team is one of five women’s squads competing in the Junior Pan American tournament, along with Brazil, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico. The men’s Junior Pan Am tournament is also taking place simultaneously at the same venue.

The Team USA women begin play against Puerto Rico on Wednesday at 12:20 p.m., at RCC, then play Canada on Thursday at 12:20 p.m. The tournament continues through Tuesday.

Kapana and Daboub both contributed last summer as Team USA won gold at the UANA Youth Pan American Championships in Argentina.

Adamson wins ITA tournament

Corona del Mar High alumnus Alec Adamson captured the title at the ITA Laguna Niguel Summer College Circuit tennis tournament over the weekend.

Adamson, a sophomore-to-be at UC Davis, defeated Austin Rapp, 6-3, 7-6, in the men’s open singles final Monday at Laguna Niguel Racquet Club. Rapp is headed to UCLA.

Adamson, who was seeded No. 6, defeated UC Riverside’s Julian Ruffin, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and recent University High graduate Eric Tseng (UC San Diego), 7-6, 7-6, in the semifinals. Adamson did not drop a set in the tournament.

Adamson, who was a National High School All-American at CdM, finished first-team All-Big West Conference in both singles and doubles as a freshman at UC Davis. He went 22-11 overall in singles.
