Briefs: Ross, Pavlik, Americans continue to win in Poland

Costa Mesa resident April Ross teamed with former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik to remain unbeaten in three pool play matches on Wednesday at the Federation Internationale de Volleyball Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland.

Ross, a Newport Harbor High product, and Pavlik, the No. 3 women’s seed, topped Laura Bloem and Rebekka Kadijk from the Netherlands, 21-19, 21-15, in 37 minutes to advance to the first round of single-elimination play on Thursday.

The Americans will meet No. 24-seeded Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland in their first match on Thursday.

In the men’s event, former partners Jake Gibb of Costa Mesa and Sean Rosenthal of Corona del Mar, earned pool-play triumphs with their new partners.

Rosenthal, playing now with Phil Dalhausser to form the No. 3 seeded entry, defeated Sebastian Chevallier and Mats Kovatsch of Switzerland, 21-18, 20-22, 15-8, to improve to 2-0 in pool play on Wednesday.

Gibb and Casey Patterson, seeded No. 4, bounced back from an upset loss on Tuesday to defeat No. 28-seeded Iver Andres Horrem and Geir Eithun of Norway, 21-16, 21-16, in 38 minutes on Wednesday.

Men’s pool play will conclude Thursday, with the first round of single-elimination play beginning on Friday.

The quarterfinals are set for Saturday, with the semifinals and final taking place on Sunday.

Tournament coming

The Orange County Breakers of World Team Tennis are sponsoring a high school mixed doubles tournament at The Tennis Club Newport Beach on Sunday.

Play will be round-robin, with each team guaranteed four matches. The top two teams will play a one-set final on Monday at 4 p.m. at the Bren Events Center, prior to the Breakers’ match against the Texas Wild.

Players must be entering freshmen or returning high school students. WTT would prefer teammates from the same school, but players are permitted to play with a partner from another school. Entrants all get one ticket to the Breakers match and will be recognized on-court during the pro match. A group photo will be taken with the Breakers team as well.

Burnham second

Newport Harbor High product Kirby Burnham and her partner Meg Norton finished second in the Ontario Volleyball Assn. Grand Slam beach tournament, completed Sunday at Ashbridges Bay in Ontario, Canada.

Burnham, who won the AVCA collegiate sand volleyball title as a 6-foot-2 junior at USC last spring, could not get past the Canadian duo of Melissa Humana-Parades and Taylor Pischke in a three-game final.

Burnham and Norton won quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Sunday.

Anae in USA pool

Corona del Mar High product and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Tumua Anae is one of 14 candidates for 13 spots to represent the United States in the 2013 FINA World Championships in women’s water polo, Team USA Coach Adam Krikorian announced.

Anae, a 5-foot-11 goalie, represented Team USA in the 2012 Olympics in London, the 2011 FINA World League Super Final and the 2011 Pan American Games.

She was a three-time All-American and won an NCAA championship at USC after starring for the Sea Kings.

The Americans open the world championships on July 21 against Greece in Barcelona, Spain.

Prior to the world championships, Team USA will play an exhibition tournament in the Netherlands.
