Newport Harbor High alumna Kaleigh Gilchrist scored a goal as the U.S. women's water polo senior national team defeated host Russia, 10-6, on Wednesday to improve to 2-0 at the Kirishi Cup in Kirishi, Russia.

Gilchrist, who recently graduated from USC, is joined on the team by Corona del Mar High junior-to-be Maddie Musselman. Both had goals on Tuesday as Team USA beat Hungary, 13-10.

Annika Dries (Laguna Beach High/Stanford) scored a team-best four goals in Wednesday's win.

Team USA continues the tournament Thursday, when it plays against Italy at 4 a.m. Pacific time. The tournament concludes with games against Spain on Friday at 3 a.m. Pacific time, and the Netherlands on Saturday at 12:30 a.m.

UCI athletes lauded

The Big West Conference honored 46 UC Irvine student-athletes with academic all-conference honors for winter and spring sports.

The honorees included those who competed in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track & field and women's water polo.

To be eligible, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, be at least a sophomore academically and compete in at least half of their team's contests.

The UCI honorees:

Baseball: Ryan Cooper, Jimmy Litchfield, Andrew Morales, Jonathan Munoz and Taylor Sparks.

Men's basketball: John Ryan and Travis Souza.

Women's basketball: Vanessa Aguilar, Raelyn Cheung-Sutton, Madison McKenney, Kelly Meggs and Jennifer Tsurumoto.

Men's golf: Bhuvan Potluri.

Women's golf: Ronnie Valerio.

Men's tennis: Rafael Davidian and Jonathan Hammel.

Women's tennis: Kat Facey, Franziska Goettsching, Sarah Gong, Marivick Mamitt and Brooke Schweyer.

Men's track & field: Stephen Brown, Michael Kennedy, Julian Lujan, Oliver Pham, Andrew Snyder, Alex Tebbe and Cameron Vaca.

Women's track & field: Itos Aikionbare, Marie Brashears, Mary Follo, Lauren Hall, Kaycee Holcomb, Katherine Kass, Pearl Law, Charity Lyons, Ericka Nowell, Carlotta Pham, Marthie Ponty, Mady Sando, Chelsea Schneider, Lacey Surak and Lily Trinh.
