Day-Monroe defends U.S. heptathlon title

SACRAMENTO — Sharon Day-Monroe, a Costa Mesa High graduate, defended her heptathlon title at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State on Saturday.

Day-Monroe, who finished with 6,470 points, won the heptathlon for the third time in four years. She edged out Barbara Nwaba (6,307) in the seven-event competition.

Day-Monroe, a former Cal Poly San Luis Obispo standout, went into the final day of the two-day heptathlon with a 123-point lead. She increased it with her first-place performance in the javelin (153 feet 8 inches) and sixth-place showing in the 800 meters (2 minutes 11.54 seconds).

In the javelin, Day-Monroe 13 inches off her personal best in the event.

Day-Monroe also finished first in the shotput (50-8 1/4 inches), first in the high jump (6-0 1/2 inches), second in the 100 hurdles (13.42), ninth in the long jump (19-2 1/2), and 10th in the 200 (24.40).
