Knapp, Fernandez in match play at Cal State Am

Jake Knapp and Pete Fernandez Jr., both of Costa Mesa, qualified for match play at the 104th California Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf Course on Tuesday.

Knapp, the former Estancia High standout and the UCLA senior-to-be, is the No. 2 seed and will play against No. 31 William Brueckner of Oakland in the round of 32, starting at 8:42 a.m.

Knapp finished tied for second in stroke play, going 5-under-par 139 (68-71), three strokes behind the medalist Satch Herrmann of Ventura.

Fernandez, out of UC Irvine, who finished runner-up in the Big West Conference tournament, was tied for 12th in stroke play at even (72-72).

Fernandez is the No. 16 seed taking on No. 17 Perry Cohen of La Jolla, starting at 7:39 a.m. on Wednesday in the round of 32.
