Girls’ Lacrosse: Trio honored with first-team status

Newport Harbor High seniors Alex Palmer and Cailynn Smethurst, along with sophomore Rylie Siegfried, have each garnered first-team All-Century/Sunset League accolades for the recently completed girls’ lacrosse season.

Palmer led Newport Harbor (10-7, 6-4 in league) with 47 goals, adding 35 ground balls and 33 combined caused turnovers and interceptions. She helped the Sailors finish second in the six-team league and advance to the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs for the first time in three years. The No. 12-seeded Sailors fell to No. 5 Mater Dei, 12-2, in the first round.

Smethurst, a four-year varsity starter at goalie, had a 50% save average, 14 ground balls and seven caused turnovers and interceptions.

Siegfried had 18 goals, 12 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers and interceptions.

Newport Harbor senior defender Jenna Nulty and junior midfielder Daniela Vazquez were second-team all-league selections.

Julia Taylor of Foothill earned the league MVP award, while Sophia Naumovski of El Dorado was named Most Valuable Goalie.
