Paddle-out for Kyle Johnson to take place

A paddle-out has been set for Saturday at 8 a.m. to honor Kyle Johnson, the firefighter who died in an off-duty automobile accident that took place on Father’s Day.

Stand-up paddleboarders and supporters will gather at Newport Pier in remembrance of Johnson, a former Costa Mesa High water polo player and swimmer.

His wife, Kori Johnson, is the Costa Mesa High cheer coach who also graduated from the school. The family is well known in the Costa Mesa community. Kevin Johnson, 13, is a standout goalie in water polo for Costa Mesa Aquatic Club and he attends Costa Mesa Middle School on the high school’s campus. Kyra, 10, attends Sonora Elementary, where Kori works as a health assistant.

Kyle Johnson, who died at 42, was also an active community member who was known for his altruism.
