Briefs: CdM’s Kline shares MVP honor

Corona del Mar High senior Kacie Kline earned Pacific Coast League Co-MVP honors after helping the CdM girls’ lacrosse team share the league title with Beckman.

Kline’s senior teammates and fellow captains Sabrina Smith, Kendall Mulvaney and Jamie Smith, as well as sophomore Payton Carter, also earned first-team all-league accolades.

Kline led CdM (16-5, 9-1 in league) with 76 goals, and her 29 assists were second on the squad. She helped the Sea Kings share the league title for the second time in three years and, as the No. 6 seed, advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs. CdM upset No. 3 Foothill in the quarterfinals before bowing out to Los Alamitos, 16-9.

Sabrina Smith scored 44 goals, third on the team, and led the Sea Kings with 71 draw controls. Her 19 assists was third-best on the team.

Kendall Mulvaney had 21 goals and a team-best 51 assists. Her 36 ground balls were second among CdM players.

Carter emerged to score 58 goals and control 47 draws, both second on the squad. Her 60 ground balls led CdM.

CdM juniors Paige Nelson and Emily Schwartz, as well as freshman Kennedy Mulvaney, earned second-team all-league honors. Freshman Jensen Coop received honorable mention.

Four locals All-OCL

Costa Mesa High sophomore opposite Mason Tufuga and Estancia junior outside hitter Kaena McReynolds received first-team All-Orange Coast League honors in boys’ volleyball.

Tufuga keyed the Mustangs’ sweep of the Battle for the Bell series against Estancia for the second straight season. Costa Mesa (6-12, 3-7 in league) finished fifth in league, ahead of last-place Estancia (1-23, 0-10).

The second team featured Costa Mesa senior outside hitter Sean Comer and Estancia senior middle blocker Seaver Sanchez.

McKeown shines

Corona del Mar High junior Sydney McKeown has earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League accolades in softball.

McKeown, a left-handed outfielder and pitcher, was a catalyst for CdM. The leadoff hitter led the league with a .662 batting average. She led CdM with 24 runs scored and 17 stolen bases, and also had 12 runs batted in.

In the circle McKeown, who split time with senior Mylie Wilson, finished 3-3 with a 1.90 earned-run average.

McKeown, a repeat first-team all-league selection, was CdM’s only all-league honoree. The Sea Kings finished 9-16, and 0-10 in league.

Two Sailors lauded

Newport Harbor High junior Shea Horvath and sophomore Sylvana Barrios have been named second-team All-Sunset League accolades in softball.

Horvath, a center fielder and leadoff hitter, batted .204 for the Sailors. Her 11 hits tied for the team lead. She also had three runs batted in and a team-best three doubles.

Barrios, a catcher and outfielder, hit .179, including a double.

Newport Harbor finished 2-23-1, 0-10 in the Sunset League.

Tera Blanco of Marina was named the league’s Most Valuable Player, while Micaela Vierra of Huntington Beach earned Most Valuable Pitcher honors. The Vikings and Oilers shared the league title.

Ryan King of Marina and Ryan Denhart of Los Alamitos shared league Rookie of the Year recognition.

Buckingham leads

LONG BEACH — Newport Harbor High product Charlie Buckingham will battle Bruno Fontes of Brazil for the Laser Class crown at the North American Championships on Sunday.

Saturday, Buckingham’s lead over the Brazilian narrowed to one point after three days of racing.

Three races are scheduled on the final day.
