Local trio victorious at Adoption Guild

Maria Heropoulos, Maria Mayberry and Garrett Snyder were local winners at the 2014 Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Tennis Classic, completed June 1 at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Second-seeded Heropoulos, of Newport Coast, won the women’s 4.0 singles division after defeating unseeded Katrina Held of Laguna Niguel, 6-1, 6-4, in the championship match.

Mayberry of Newport Beach and partner Khanh Tran of Irvine won the women’s 3.5 doubles title, topping Felicia Nugent and Linda Simmons of Aliso Viejo, 6-2, 6-1.

Snyder, a Corona del Mar High alumnus and Newport Beach resident, won the mixed open doubles with Meredith Xepoleas of Huntington Beach. Snyder and Xepoleas got past Laurent Dropsy of Irvine and Kristin Yep of Alhambra, 6-4, 6-4, in the final match.

Emmanuel Mensah of Imperial Beach won the men’s open singles division. Mensah, the top seed, defeated No. 2-seeded Tim Mudrick of Irvine, 6-3, 6-3 in the men’s championship match.

Sydney Van Alphen of Laguna Beach outlasted Newport Beach resident and UC Irvine women’s tennis player Mazy Watrous, 7-6, 6-3, to win the women’s open division.

Mudrick and Stuart Duncan of Laguna Beach won the men’s open doubles, defeating Devin Bowen of Costa Mesa and Tony Bujan of San Clemente, 6-3, 7-5, in the title match.

Robert Wesley Hinkel of Newport Beach made the finals of both the men’s 5.5 and mixed 5.5 doubles divisions. Hinkel and John Cross of Irvine, the top seeds, lost to unseeded Peter Davidson of Laguna Beach and James Harper of Santa Ana, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, in the men’s 5.5 title match. In the mixed 5.5, No. 2-seeded Hinkel and Samantha Mills of Newport Beach fell to top-seeded Michelle Esquivel and Danny Salloum, both of Anaheim, 6-2, 6-4.

Newport Beach’s Colleen Scanlon made the women’s 5.0 doubles final with partner Brahna Pastorini of Long Beach, before the No. 2-seeded tandem fell to top-seeded Penny Finders of El Segundo and Lisa Traylor of Laguna Hills, 6-1, 6-2. Corona del Mar resident Tyler Baird and partner Scott VanSon of Laguna Hills, the No. 3 seeds, made the men’s 4.0 doubles final before falling to top-seeded Bryce Alfaro and Huberto Sanchez of Oxnard, 6-2, 6-4.

Another local runner-up was Janet Bellamy of Newport Beach, who made the women’s 3.5 singles final as an unseeded player before falling to top-seeded Amanda Lean of Fullerton, 6-1, 7-6.

The Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Tennis Classic began May 24 and opening rounds were held at Newport Beach Tennis Club and The Tennis Club.
