Newport Harbor High seniors Shaun Vetrovec and Connor Seabold made the All-Sunset League first team in baseball for leading the Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, the program’s first postseason appearance in four years and second in 24 years.

Vetrovec and Seabold, both right-handed pitchers, helped Newport Harbor (13-14, 6-9 in league) go from a last-place team the past three seasons to finishing fourth this season and earning an at-large berth into the playoffs. The Sailors finished the regular season with a .500 overall record for the first time since 2010. Newport Harbor wound up with a losing record after dropping a wild-card playoff game on the road to Orange Lutheran, 7-0.

Vetrovec, a two-time first-team selection bound for UC Irvine, posted a 7-4 record with a 1.16 earned-run average, and threw seven complete games, two for shutouts. He struck out 100 in 72 1/3 innings.

Seabold, who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles with the 571st pick in the 19th round, went 4-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 60 innings. He tossed four complete games and recorded one save.

Seabold, a Cal State Fullerton commit, had a .424 batting average, a .473 on-base percentage, a .482 slugging percentage, 20 runs and five doubles. He also played center field.

Newport Harbor junior shortstop Logan Mahaffy and sophomore Luke Genova, an outfielder and designated hitter, each made the second team.

Edison’s Brian Schales earned the Sunset League MVP award.
