Softball: Local trio on OCL first team

Estancia High senior Kelly Hinkle and sophomore Felicia Rios, along with Costa Mesa sophomore Jasmine Herrera, have all earned first-team All-Orange Coast League honors for softball.

Hinkle was valuable as both a pitcher and hitter for the Eagles (16-8, 6-4 in league), who finished third in league to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. Hinkle was 16-8 with a 2.02 earned-run average. She struck out 139 batters in 138 2/3 innings. Offensively, she hit .349, and her 16 runs batted in tied for second on the team. Her five doubles also were second on the squad.

Rios, a shortstop, was second on the Eagles with a .406 batting average. She led the team with 19 RBIs and 10 doubles, and also had a triple and a home run. She stole six bases.

Herrera, a first baseman and catcher, hit .367 for the Mustangs. She tied for third on Mesa with nine runs batted in, was third with 13 runs scored and second with four doubles, adding a triple as well.

Costa Mesa finished 3-17, and 2-8 in league for fifth place out of six teams.

Estancia senior catcher Bryanna Vernon and sophomore outfielder Maya Van Den Heever earned second-team all-league honors, as did Costa Mesa sophomore infielder Anessa Farldow and freshman shortstop Brenna Alvis.

League champion Calvary Chapel swept the league’s top awards, as teammates Kaitlin Estes and Kimberlee Estes shared the MVP award. Calvary Chapel’s Jamie Nelson earned Most Valuable Pitcher honors.
