Boys’ Volleyball: Mesa’s Tufuga is league co-MVP

Costa Mesa High junior opposite Mason Tufuga earned a share of the Orange Coast League MVP award after he sparked the boys’ volleyball team to a runner-up finish in league and its first CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs appearance in six years.

Tufuga, who’s 6-foot-5, led Costa Mesa (13-5, 8-2 in league) to two more overall wins than it had posted in the past four years combined. The Mustangs dropped a first-round match to Capistrano Valley in four sets at home.

Tufuga, a two-time first-team pick, totaled 360 kills, 98 digs, 64 service aces, 61 blocks and 58 assists. He hit .459.

Tufuga shared the league’s top honor with Laguna Beach’s Dane Olson.

Costa Mesa junior setter Coby Pham and senior libero Andres Ramirez made the first team.

Pham produced 457 assists, 63 digs, 28 aces and 21 blocks.

Ramirez had 158 digs and 32 aces.

Costa Mesa senior middle blocker Joseph Saucedo and junior outside hitter Steven Vu are second-team members.

Jeremy Lawrence, a senior setter, made the second team for Estancia (7-16, 1-9 in league), which finished last in league.
