Day-Monroe to be honored

Sharon Day-Monroe a two-time Olympian and the 2005 NCAA high jump champion, will be inducted into the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Athletics Hall of Fame in October.

Day-Monroe, a Costa Mesa High product who competed at Cal Poly from 2003 to 2007, was a seven-time NCAA All-American, combining indoor and outdoor competition. She won Big West Conference high jump titles three times for the Mustangs.

She was also a conference champion in the long jump and heptathlon and won the high jump in 2004 at the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships.

The Cal Poly Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2005 and 2008, she won a bronze medal at the 2004 World Junior Championships.

She finished 24th in the high jump at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was 16th in the heptathlon at the 2012 London Olympics.

She competed in the 2007 Pan American Games at Rio de Janeiro, representing the United States on the first of many senior national teams.

Day-Monroe is the winningest multi-event athlete in U.S. history with three outdoor heptathlon titles and four consecutive indoor pentathlon crowns. She has been the top American finisher in international competition over the last seven years in the heptathlon, with her best performance a sixth-place finish in Moscow.

Day-Monroe holds Cal Poly records in the high jump (6-4 3/4) and heptathlon (5,642 points) and broke the American record in the pentathlon on Feb. 21, 2014.

In women’s soccer, Day-Monroe ranks No. 4 all-time in Cal Poly history in career points (27 goals and 14 assists for 68 points), earned first-team All-Big West honors all four years and helped Cal Poly twice reach the NCAA Tournament.

She was 2003 Big West Tournament MVP and 2003 Big West Freshman of the Year.

A former three-sports star at Costa Mesa High, she is among eight inductees honored by Cal Poly.
