UC Irvine junior Itos Aikhionbare has been named Big West Conference Field Athlete of the Year in voting by the conference coaches.

Aikhionbare is the first student-athlete from UCI to win the conference’s top field honor.

She was a double-winner at last weekend’s Big West Championships in Davis, capturing the shotput (49 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the discus (167-9).

A three-time Big West Field Athlete of the Week honoree in 2014, she set UCI school records this season in the shot put (53-9) and the discus (170-2). She has won the shotput and discus in the same meet five times this season.

Sicard top frosh

UC Irvine’s Lloyd Sicard has been selected as the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, announced by the league office Wednesday.

He becomes the first student-athlete from UCI to win the conference’s top frosh award in track and field.

Sicard finished second in the 110-meter hurdles at last weekend’s Big West Championships in 14.01, the third-fastest time in UC Irvine history.

His time of 51.71 in the 400-meter hurdles at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational May 3 ranks No. 5 in UCI history.

Sicard ranks 30th in the West Region in the 110 hurdles and 40th in the 400 hurdles.

He won the 400 hurdles at the Cal/Nevada Championships and the 110 hurdles at the UC Riverside Spring Classic and Big West Challenge Cup this season.
