Youth Basketball: Newport Lightning 13U Black wins MayFest California State Games Qualifer

The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s 13U/Seventh-Grade Black team won the MayFest California State Games Qualifying Tournament at the MAPS in Garden Grove May 17.

The NLBC, coached by Scott Stucki, showed a tremendous defensive presence holding teams to 31 points per game and winning the championship game by 19, while averaging 44 points per game on the offensive end.

The NLBC was led by the inside/outside scoring duo of Danny Hatch and John Humphreys, while Ethan Garbers, Shane Premer and Cade Overfelt connected for 15 three-pointers in the tournament.

Justin Lin, Troy Smith and Charlie Levis led the team in rebounding, while Nic Ayala provided key defense off the bench for the team.

With this tournament win, the NLBC team qualifies for the California State Games July 17-19 in San Diego.
