College Roundup: OCC’s Smythe third in 800

State championships

SAN MATEO — Orange Coast College freshman Eamon Smythe earned All-American honors by finishing third in the 800 meters at the meet that was completed Saturday at the College of San Mateo.

Smythe’s time of 1 minute, 52.96 seconds was just off the winning pace of Mt. San Antonio’s Gabe Toscano (1:52.75).

OCC’s Justin Gibbons was third in the 110 high hurdles (14.67).

Sophomore Lucio Ramirez was eighth in the 10,000 in 32:24.19, and 10th in the 5,000 in 15:23.7.

In the pole vault, OCC’s Kyle Victoria (14 feet, 8 ¾ inches) and Jason McKinnon (14-3 ¾) were ninth and 10th, respectively.

BASEBALL

UC Santa Barbara 6, UC Irvine 5

SANTA BARBARA — Two unearned runs proved costly for the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Sunday.

The loss completed a three-game sweep for the then-No. 12-ranked Gauchos (39-13-1, 15-6 in conference) and extended UCI’s losing streak to four games. It also dropped the Anteaters (31-21, 13-8) into a tie for third place with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with three conference games remaining.

Freshman second baseman Cole Kreuter was two for four with two runs batted in to pace UCI’s 11-hit attack.

Freshman right fielder Cameron Bishop was two for three with one RB I and junior shortstop Mikey Duarte was two for five.

Freshman reliever Alonzo Garcia pitched three scoreless innings to allow UCI to eventually put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

State championships

SAN MATEO — Orange Coast College freshman Taylor Sims was seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in the meet that was completed Saturday at College of San Mateo.

Her time of 14.63 seconds was a school record, bettering a 35-year-old standard of 14.73, set by Liz Carroll.

OCC’s Hannah Heising was eighth in the 400 hurdles (1 minute, 6.08 seconds) and Michaela Schaeffer was 11th in the triple jump (30 feet, 3 ¼ inches).
