High School Roundup: CdM’s Popp breaks two school records

CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries

RIVERSIDE — Corona del Mar High junior Meagan Popp set two school records Thursday at Riverside City College.

Popp qualified fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.77, breaking the school record of 1:51.26 set last year by Ally McCormick. Popp also qualified third in the 500 free, in 4:50.71. The previous school record was a 4:51.23, set by Lexi Shue in 2004.

CdM senior Stephanie Samudro qualified third in the 100 butterfly, in 54.84 seconds. Samudro also qualifed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, in 1:03.22.

Amongh other swimmers and relays qualifying for championship finals, Popp, Nicole Lin, Samudro and Sami Pratt qualified sixth in the 200 medley relay, in 1:47.39. They lowered the school record set last week at Pacific Coast League finals by Popp, Linn, Samudro and Maddie Musselman (1:47.93). Musselman is not swimming at CIF due to a water polo committment.

Popp, Lin, Samudro and Pratt also qualified sixth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.95).

The Division 1 finals are Saturday at 5 p.m. at Riverside City College.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

CIF Southern Section Division 1 preliminaries

RIVERSIDE — Corona del Mar High junior Tyler Lin set the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke Thursday at Riverside City College.

Lin qualified first in the event, in 55.70 seconds. The previous school record was Michael Liao’s 2010 mark of 56.30, which Lin tied last week at Pacific Coast League finals.

CdM senior Liam Karas qualified second in the 200 IM in 1:47.61, behind his friend and club teammate of University, Corey Okubo, who set the meet record in 1:46.92. Lin qualified fourth in the same event, in 1:50.12.

The CdM quartet of Ethan Archer, Lin, Justin Hanson and Karas qualified second in the 200 medley relay, in 1:33.40. University also set the meet record in qualifying first in 1:30.87.

Among other swimmers and relays qualifying for championship finals, Karas also qualified fourth in the 100 free, in 45.93.

The Division 1 finals are Saturday at 5 p.m. at Riverside City College.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 8, Oxford Academy 6

Sage Hill finished its regular season with an Academy League win Thursday at Sage to finish with a 14-6 record overall and 8-4 in league.

With the win, the Lighting finished in third place and earn an automatic CIF bid.

Freshman Brett Super earned his sixth win of the year only allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. Kellen Ochi picked up the save after pitching two scoreless innings.

Conner Bock went three for three with a double and and RBI while Senior Harrison Rhee went two for four with two clutch RBIs. Toby Bush also came up big with a triple in the fifth to add an insurance run.

Seniors Brett Dunlavey, Adam Ellingson and Colby Bock along with Rhee were honored at their last home game after all four played four seasons for the Lightning.

Calvary Chapel 5, Estancia 3

Connor Brown led Estancia (9-16) as he went two for three with an RBI in the Orange Coast League finale Thursday.

Jason Rodriguez, Aaron Boaitey and Cody Nelson (RBI) had one hit each for Estancia.

SOFTBALL

Calvary Chapel 6, Estancia 2

Estancia finished in third place of the Orange Coast League to qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Maya Van Den Heever went two for three and scored a run Thursday for Estancia.
