High School Roundup: Connors breaks school record in 200 IM

CIF Division 3 preliminaries

RIVERSIDE — Costa Mesa High senior Tyler Connors broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley Wednesday night at Riverside City College.

Connors completed the race in 1 minute, 57.92 seconds, qualifying fifth at preliminaries. The previous record was a 1:58.54 by Chris Duncan in 1985.

Connors also qualified third in the 100 backstroke, touching in 53.68 seconds.

The Division 3 finals begin Thursday at 5 p.m., back at Riverside City College.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

CIF Division 3 preliminaries

RIVERSIDE — Estancia High sophomore Brandi White qualified for the consolation finals in two events Wednesday night at Riverside City College.

White qualified 15th in the 200-yard individual medley, in 2 minutes, 20.47 seconds. She qualified 12th in the 100 backstroke, in 1:03.20.

The Eagles’ 200 medley relay team of Jenna Rutledge, White, Darby Lester and Nikkie Blinn placed 30th in 2:05.48.

The Division 3 finals begin Thursday at 5 p.m., back at Riverside City College.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 16, Servite 2

Bjorn Hoffmann swept in singles for the Sea Kings in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round match Wednesday at CdM.

The doubles teams of Ryan Andrews and Jonny Rhone, Tyler Gaede and Samee Aboubakare, as well as Oliver Kim and Ari Coskinas, all swept for the Sea Kings.

CdM won the coin flip and will play host to Dos Pueblos in the second round Friday. Dos Pueblos defeated Crescenta Valley, 15-3, in another first-round match.

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 9, Irvine 2

Senior Austin Bernard went one for one with a run batted and scored a run, making the most of his lone at-bat of his career in the Sea Kings’ regular-season finale at home on Wednesday.

Corona del Mar failed to make the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, finishing 7-19 overall and 5-10 in league.

Senior Trent Dill recorded his first hit as well and drove in two runs for the Sea Kings.

CdM’s Wyatt Zalewski went three for three.
