High School Roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball opens playoffs with sweep

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Harvard-Westlake

Joey Martino recorded 19 kills to help lead the No. 2-seeded Sea Kings to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-12 first-round win in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs at CdM Tuesday.

Kevin Fults (nine kills), Ryan Moss (six kills), Will Hunter (five kills) and Matt Ctvrtlik (37 assists, three block assists, two aces) also contributed to the win for CdM (25-2).

The Sea Kings next play against San Juan Hills (20-9), which beat Saugus. A coin flip will determine the site of Thursday’s match.

Mayfair def. Sage Hill

Zach Drobenko finished with 13 kills for the Lightning in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs that Mayfair won, 25-19, 25-21, 25-13, on Monday.

Sage Hill (5-15) played without Matt Chen (ankle). Connor Chung and Jack Dickinson stepped in for Chen, an outside hitter.

Sage Hill made the postseason as an at-large entry after it placed fourth in league.

BASEBALL

Oxford Academy 9, Sage Hill 6

CYPRESS — Parker Reposa went two for four with a run batted in and a triple for the Lightning in an Academy League game on the road Tuesday.

Sage Hill is tied for third place in league with Oxford Academy at 7-4. The teams wrap up league at Sage Hill on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Brett Dunlavey and Conner Bock each doubled for Sage Hill, which dropped to 13-6 overall.

Irvine 3, Corona del Mar 2

IRVINE — Konrad Lyle doubled and finished with two runs batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Evan Larsen, Nick Premer and Austin Smith had hits, and Jake Hastings had two hits.

Larsen was the hard-luck loser with a complete-game two hitter that included six strikeouts.

CdM ends the season Wednesday at home against Irvine at 3:30 p.m.

Calvary Chapel 3, Estancia 0

Connor Brown threw a complete game for Estancia in a key Orange Coast League game at Vanguard University on Tuesday.

Brown allowed two earned runs and struck out three for Estancia (9-15, 7-7 in league), which is battling Godinez for third place in league.

Estancia closes out league at home against Calvary Chapel on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Specer Keith won two events and helped Corona del Mar High to a second-place finish Friday at University High.

The Sea Kings will be sending a large group to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries Saturday at Jim Scott Stadium.

Keith won the 1,600 meters in a personal-best 4 minutes, 17.46 seconds and won the 3,200 in 9:21.78.

Giovanni Gentosi was named field athlete of the meet after winning the shotput (49 feet, 2 inches) and finishing second in the discus (141-1). Both marks were personal bests.

Alex Wilde won the high jump with a jump of 6-4

Anthony Cappel-West and Ryan Myers finished first and second and qualified for CIF in the pole vault with vaults of 12 feet. Patrick Jennings also qualified finishing third at 11 feet.

Matt Hurst qualified in the 200 (22.25) and 400 (48.52), finishing second in both. He also anchored the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that qualified for CIF.

Sutton Barbato, Barrett Barbato, Danny Giger and Hurst finished second in the 4x100 relay in a personal-best 42.87.

Austin Baxter, Alex Wilde, Ethan Hold and Hurst finished third in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.97.

Hold qualified in the 800 finishing third in a personal-best 2:00.02.

Michael Pierotti qualified in the discus with a personal best mark of 133-7.

Woodbridge won the meet with 170 points. CdM was second at 109.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High sophomore Emma Kratzberg won the 100-meter hurdles (15.55 seconds), finished third in the 300 hurdles (46.53) and anchored the 4x400 relay team that finished third and qualified for Saturday’s CIF Southern Section Division 3 prelminaries at Jim Scott Stadium.

CdM’s Maria King won the shotput (32 feet, 1 3/4 inches) and was a PCL champ Friday at University High, where she helped the Sea Kings to a third-place finish.

Erika Anderson, Elin Wolker, Emily Glenn and qualified in the 4x400 in 4:09.45.

Jillian Beese, Sophie Shambrook, Emily Glenn and Tiffany Ginger qualified in the 4x100 relay, placing third in a personal-best 50.95.

Asha Hardy qualified for CIF in the high jump, finished second with a clearance of 5-1.

Kayla Wensley qualified for CIF in the shotput, finishign third with a personal-best mark 30-9.

Emily Glenn qualified for CIF in the long jump, finishing second with a personal-best leap of 16-1.

Amanda Cooper (second) and Hannah Bagdasar (third) qualified for CIF in the discus with throws of 104-4 and 102-10, respectively.

BOYS GOLF

CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional

LONG BEACH – Corona del Mar High senior Hale Furey missed the cut to advance by one stroke after carding a six-over-par 78 at Skylinks Golf Course on Monday.

Furey, the Pacific Coast League champion, dealt with windy conditions, which affected his putting. He had 35 putts, CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said.

“Tough day for Hale,” Starkweather said. “Missing the cut by one stroke is a credit to his skills.”

Furey and the CdM boys’ golf team will next compete in the CIF Southern Section South Coast Team Divisional Monday at Talega Golf Club in San Clemente.
