High School Roundup: CdM’s Bocancea wins two league titles

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Silviu Bocancea swept the shotput and discus throw events, lifting the Sea Kings to a runner-up finish at University High on Friday.

Bocancea heaved the shotput 45 feet 8½ inches and the discus 139-8.

CdM’s Parker Nostrand won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes 24.01 seconds and ran second in the 800 (1:56.34).

Ryan Myers claimed the pole vault with an effort of 12 feet 6 inches.

The Sea Kings’ qualifiers advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Jim Scott Stadium on May 16.

Academy League finals

IRVINE — Chance Kuehnel won the 110-meter hurdles, breaking his record of 15.27 seconds to help the Lightning to a runner-up finish at Crean Lutheran High on Thursday.

Sage Hill’s CJ McCord won the high jump by clearing 6 feet 4 inches and he took first in the 400 in 52.41. He also anchored the school’s 4x100 (44.97) and 4x400 (3:35.64) relay teams to victories.

Another Lightning first-place finisher included pole vaulter Alex Escalera (11-6).

Sage Hill’s qualifiers advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries at Carpinteria High on May 16.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Raquel Powers placed second in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races for the fifth-place Sea Kings at University High on Friday.

Powers posted a time of 5 minutes 9.51 seconds in the 1,600 and 11:08.03 in the 3,200.

CdM’s Claire Keddington took first in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet 11 inches.

CdM’s qualifiers move on to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Jim Scott Stadium on May 16.

Academy League finals

IRVINE — Julia Lowe finished second in the 3,200 meters and third in the 1,600 for the fifth-place Lightning at Crean Lutheran High on Thursday.

Lowe ran the 3,200 in 13 minutes 9 seconds and the 1,600 in 5:28. She advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 preliminaries at Carpinteria High on May 16.
