College Roundup: OCC opens Super Regional with win

Cody Bruder went two for three with four runs batted in and two runs scored to help lead the Pirates to the win to open the best-of-three Super Regional Friday.

Jake thumm went two for three with two runs and an RBI, while Grand Davis, Cody Nulph and Robert Longtree each drove in one run for OCC (30-9), the No. 1 seed in the California Community College Athletic Assn. Southern California bracket.

David Hill improved to 10-1 after allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out two and walking two in 6 1/3 innings to help the Pirates win their ninth straight game.

Allan Hancock is 24-15-1.

The second game of the Super Regional is Saturday at OCC at noon.

UC Irvine 3, Cal Poly SLO 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Andrew Morales dealt eight innings, striking out nine and held a potent Mustang offense to two runs on six hits while striking out nine to improve to 9-0 for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Friday.

Morales then handed the ball to Sam Moore in the ninth. Nick Torres flared a single to left to lead off the inning but Moore bounced back and struck out the side to post his 23rd save of the year.

Justin Castro, Chris Rabago and Grant Palmer each had an RBI with Castro leading the ‘Eaters (34-14, 15-1 in conference) with two hits.

Cal Poly is 39-10, 14-5.

The series continues Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Multi-Event Championships

DAVIS — UC Irvine sophomore Melanie Speech is in sixth place after the first day of the heptathlon in the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships at Davis.

Speech has 2,815 points after the first four events Friday, a first-day personal-best for her.

She recorded the top mark in the shot put in the field of 15 competitors with a personal-record effort of 41-8 ½ (12.71m), which ranks ninth-best in UCI history.

Speech ran 15.39 in the 100-meter hurdles, had a mark of 4-7 ½ in the high jump and finished the 200 meters in 26.05.

Danielle Littleton of UC Riverside leads the heptathlon with 3,028 points.

The final three events are Saturday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track on the UC Davis campus.
