High School Roundup: Sage boys’ swim wins league title

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Academy League finals

LA PALMA — Sage Hill won the team title on Thursday at Kennedy High.

Taras Polakoff won the butterfly (54.92) and backstroke (56.14) for the Lightning, who also won medley relay with Ethan Vovan, Harry Miller, Polakoff and Michael Pham (1:45.30).

Orange Coast League finals

Costa Mesa finished third and Estancia fourth in the league finals Friday at Costa Mesa High.

Laguna Beach won the league title.

Estancia’s Cobi White was third in the 200-yard IM (2:12.95), as well as the 100 back (59.64). Costa Mesa’s Angel Rosado was second in the 100 back (57.80) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.75). The Mustangs’ August Akerstrom was fourth in the 500 free (5:35.15).

Costa Mesa and Estancia compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries on Friday at 9 a.m.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Orange Coast League finals

Estancia finished second and Costa Mesa third behind champion Laguna Beach on Friday at Costa Mesa High.

Estancia junior Brandi White won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.15, and she was third in the 100 breast (1:16.27). The Eagles’ Finley Garnett was fourth in the 50 free in 27.39.

The Mustangs’ Kendra Ferguson was third in the 100 back (1:09.26), while Costa Mesa senior Bridgette Smitheram was fourth in the 100 back (1:10.34) and the 100 free (59.73). The Mustangs’ Yesennia Villa was fifth in the 500 free in 6:08.14.

Costa Mesa and Estancia compete in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries on Friday at 9 a.m.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Hope Bender set two Sunset League records in the hurdles, leading Newport Harbor to a runner-up finish at Huntington Beach High on Thursday.

Bender ran the 100-meter hurdles in 14.49 seconds, topping the previous mark of 14.56 set by Esperanza’s Inshirah Jones in 1995. Bender also took down Jones’ 20-year-old mark of 44.56 in the 300 by recording a 43.72.

Rachelle A La Torre swept the discus throw (140 feet 3 inches) and shotput (34-10) events.

The Sailors’ qualifiers moved on to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries at Moorpark High on May 16.

Orange Coast League finals

Paige LaBare took first in the 100- and 200-meter events, helping Costa Mesa to third place at Jim Scott Stadium on Thursday.

LaBare finished the 100 in 13.03 seconds and the 200 in 26.44.

Estancia came in fifth.

The qualifiers from the Orange Coast League finals advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Jim Scott Stadium on May 16.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Orange Coast League finals

Anuare Magana swept the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races for Costa Mesa at Jim Scott Stadium on Thursday.

Magana ran a time of 4 minutes 25.32 seconds in the 1,600 and a 9:34.65 in the 3,200.

Jayson Baker won the 800 in 2:02.98 for the Mustangs, who placed fourth as a team.

Estancia, which finished fifth as a team, saw Tyler Thomas win the shotput (48 feet 7 inches) and Luigi Gonzalez claim the discus throw (133-3).

Next for athletes from Costa Mesa and Estancia are the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Jim Scott Stadium on May 16.

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor’s Cole Smith won the discus throw with a heave of 162 feet 9 inches at Huntington Beach High on Thursday.

Michael Jarboe placed first in the shotput (51-8) for the Sailors, who finished fifth as a team.

Newport Harbor’s qualifiers reached the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries at Moorpark High on May 16.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 20, Laguna Beach 3

Yadira Valle and Sam Wagner each had four runs batted in for the Eagles in Thursday’s Orange Coast League game.

Maya Van Den Heever hit a two-run home run for Estancia (12-8, 4-4 in league).

Estancia, which is tied with rival Costa Mesa for third place in league, plays host to Godinez on Tuesday.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 15, Whitney 0

Parker Reposa threw a two-hitter for host Sage Hill, which claimed its first undefeated Academy League title in the program’s history on Friday.

Sage Hill finished 12-0 in league.

Kellen Ochi went three for three with a run batted in and a double in the game that ended after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Sage Hill plays a nonleague game at Inglewood Animo Leadership on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Edison 4, Newport Harbor 2

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Rigsby Duncan went two for four with two doubles in the Sailors’ Sunset League game on the road Friday.

Logan Mahaffy was two for four for Newport Harbor, which dropped to 1-12 in league.

Jeremiah Sheldon went one for three with two runs batted in.

Luke Genova gave up four runs in five innings for the Sailors, who play host to Fountain Valley on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
