High School Roundup: Newport Harbor’s Ward wins league title

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Natalie Ward won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles title in 45.37 seconds at Huntington Beach High Thursday and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries.

Rachelle A La Torre, who finished second in the shotput (38 feet, 3 inches) and the discus (127-1), and Emily Bacon, who finished third in the 3,200 in 11 minutes, 3.89 seconds, also advanced to the prelims May 17 at Moorpark High.

The Sailors 4x400 relay team of Paige Fults, Natalie Ward, Lauren Loucks and Hope Bender finished third and also qualified for CIF.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Will Fortier won the shotput (53-5 1/2) title and Steve Mantei won the discus (152-1) Thursday at Hungtington Beach High and qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries.

Sailors freshman Cole Smith qualified for CIF in two events after finishing second in the shotput (50-8) and discus (139-8). Mantei also qualified for CIF in the shotput after finishing third (49-1 1/2).

Newport Harbor’s Kyle Fagan took second in the pole vault (13-0) and Chance Siemonsma was third in the 100 meters in 11.36 to qualify for CIF.

The Sailors’ 4x100 relay team of Quest Truxton, Chance Siemonsma, Rory Fleming and Cory Stowell qualified for CIF after finishing third in 43.9.

The Sailors compete May 17 at Moorpark High.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 13, Whitney 2

Parker Reposa went three for three with two doubles and four runs batted in and also earned the pitching win for the Lightning in the Academy League game Tuesday.

Reposa strueck out five, gave four hits and no earned runs in five innings to improve to 6-0.

Brett Dunlavey went two for three with two doubles, Conner Bock was two for two, as was Kellen Ochi, while Harrison Rhee was two for three with three RBIs for Sage Hill (12-5, 6-3 in league).

Chris Goul came in to pitch the last two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

The two teams square off again on Friday in Cerritos at 3:15 p.m.
