High School Roundup: Furey wins PCL

Corona del Mar High senior Hale Furey captured the Pacific Coast League individual championshp after he shot a two-day total of three-under-par 139, winning by five strokes Wednesday.

Furey, who will golf at Harvard, fired a five-under 66 in the first round of the league finals Tuesday at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course in Irvine. CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said it was Furey’s first round without a bogey. He had five birdies.

He shot two-over 73 at San Juan Hills Golf Club in San Juan Capistrano Wednesday.

Furey was one of seven from the PCL to advance to the CIF Southern Section Southern Individual Regional at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach Monday at 1:30 p.m.

CdM’s Ian Fletcher missed the cut to advance by seven strokes, Starkweather said. Fletcher shot 81 at Rancho San Joaquin and a 77 at San Juan Hills to finish at 158.

BASEBALL

Los Alamitos 3, Newport Harbor 0

LOS ALAMITOS — Senior pitcher Connor Seabold threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts, allowing six hits, no walks and no earned runs for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Seabold, Rigsby Duncan, Logan Mahaffy and Jonah Dipoto had hits for Newport Harbor (10-13, 3-9 in league) against winning pitcher Darren McCaughan.

The Sailors must now win their final three regular-season games to have a shot at a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Sunset League finals

SEAL BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s doubles team of Phillip Vu and David Schaefer, the No. 7 seed, pulled off an upset to advance to Thursday’s semifinals.

Top-seeded Reese Stalder advanced to the semfinals in singles for the Sailors.

Vu and Schaefer beat a Huntington Beach duo, 8-5, and then upset the No. 2-seeded team of Johnny Lieu and Brandon Nguyen of Fountain Valley, 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.

Vu and Schaefer will face the No. 3 seeded team of Parker Braverman and Brandon Nguyen of Fountain Valley at 1 p.m.

Stalder opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Marina’s Kevin Manecheri. Stalder then beat Fountain Valley’s Andrew Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semfinals, where he’ll play against No. 4 seeded Max Cancillas of Marina at 1 p.m.

Newport Harbor’s Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers, the No. 4 seed in doubles, opened with an 8-0 win against a Los Alamitos duo. Perrier and Beyers then lost to the No. 5-seeded team of Winston Ngo and Darren Dinh of Fountain Valley, 2-6, 6-7 (5-7).

Orange Coast League finals

Estancia’s Charlie Griffin advanced to the semfinals in singles and the doubles team of Raul Alvarez and David Doran also moved on to the semifinals after winning twice Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Sterling Gates and Kyle Hastings each opened with a win in singles, but lost in the quarterfinals.

Griffin, and Alvarez and Doran return to the Costa Mesa Tennis Center Thursday.

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Bjorn Hoffman ad Ryan Andrews both advanced to the semifinals in singles at University High Wednesday.

Hoffman wil face Konrad Kozlowski of Uni and Andrews takes on Uni’s Drew Dawson Thursday at 2 p.m.
