High School Roundup: Escher shines in triumph

Senior Kole Escher produced five goals, setting a Newport Harbor single-season school record for goals with 52, as the Sailors walloped Edison, 20-5, in a Sunset League boys’ lacrosse finale at Davidson Field on Friday.

Escher broke Zach Gagnon’s mark of 49 set in 2009. Escher became the first Sailor to score a goal in each of the program’s regular-season games, helping Newport Harbor win its sixth straight and improve to 8-8 overall and 6-2 in league.

The 20 goals also set a single-game school record for Newport Harbor, which placed second in league.

Alex Fuller contributed seven goals and five assists, giving him 12 points, a Sailor single-game school record.

Nathan Chaness won 16 faceoffs and had 11 groundballs, while John Mooers added three goals and an assist. Chris Buchanan had two goals, an assist and six groundballs.

Defensively, Blake Lenk recorded 10 groundballs and six takeaways and Liam Whelan three groundballs and three takeaways. Goalie John Jasper made five saves.

Newport Harbor awaits the selections for the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.

BASEBALL

Estancia 5, Godinez 4

Jason Rodriguez had a two-out, game-winning hit with the bases loaded, helping the host Eagles move one game behind third-place Godinez in the Orange Coast League on Friday.

Connor Brown threw a complete game for Estancia (7-14, 5-6 in league), allowing two earned runs and striking out seven.

The Eagles have four games left in league play. The top three teams in league earn automatic berths into the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Estancia plays host to Saddleback on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Estancia’s Aaron Boaitey had a two-run run triple in the fourth inning. Nick Torres’ squeeze bunt scored Boaitey.

Costa Mesa 14, Saddleback 6

SANTA ANA — Alex Jimenez, Royce Friedman and James Barton had three hits apiece for the Mustangs in an Orange Coast League road game on Friday.

Ryan Lether went five innings, allowing one earned run, two hits, while striking out five. Kage Kistler and Grady Conner each pitched one inning in relief for Costa Mesa (7-14, 3-8 in league).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sage Hill def. Oxford Academy

Zach Drobenko finished with 26 kills and 16 digs for the Lightning in a 25-12, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23 Academy League victory at home on Friday.

Matt Chen recorded 13 digs, eight kills and four service aces, while Jack Dickinson and Parker Warden combined for 14 blocks for Sage Hill (4-13, 4-7 in league).

Saddleback def. Estancia

The Eagles dropped an Orange Coast League home match, which Saddleback won, 25-16, 25-12, 25-19, on Thursday.

Estancia is 0-9 in league.
