Baseball: OCC takes first game

Orange Coast 7, El Camino 4

The host Pirates rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 and scored four in the eighth inning to prevail in the first game of a Southern California Regional playoff series Friday.

Sophomore outfielder Tommy Bell drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and was three for four, while Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year Cody Nulph was three for four with one run batted in for the winners (28-9).

OCC starting pitcher David Hill allowed four runs, all earned, on eight hits in seven innings and was not involved in the decision. Reliever Dominic Purpura worked two perfect innings to collect the win and improve to 2-0.

Cody Bruder was two for four with one RBI and Jake Thumm was one for four with two RBIs for OCC.

The two teams will complete the series Saturday, with the first of two possible games beginning at 11 a.m. at OCC.

El Camino is 23-15.
