SANTA CLARITA – Vanguard University dropped its first two games in the four-team, double-elimination tournament Thursday and was eliminated.

The Lions (34-20) dropped the second game, 12-2, against Concordia, after falling, 8-4, to regular-season conference champion The Master’s in the first game of the day.

Against TMC (42-10), Vanguard’s three errors led to five unearned runs and all-conference starting pitcher Sean Isaac allowed eight runs (three earned), on six hits in 1 1/3 innings. He also walked three.

All-Conference shortstop Jose Rojas went three four four with a home run and two runs batted in against TMC.

Brock Eissman was two for four with two RBIs and one run and Brandon Sandoval was two for five with two runs against TMC.

Against Concordia, Kevin Bettencourt was two for three, while Paul Keating and Eissman were both two for four. Keating had an RBI and scored a run for the Lions.

Vanguard’s Roberto Johnson threw six shutout relief innings against TMC. He allowed two hits.

Vanguard 4, San Diego Christian 3

IRVINE — The No. 3-seeded Lions prevailed in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday and will meet No. 2-seeded Biola on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Concordia University.

The Lions improved to 37-20 and snapped a five-game losing streak. Vanguard had lost nine of its previous 10, before topping the Hawks.

San Diego Christian, which lost in an afternoon game and was eliminated, is 28-22.
