With less than a lap to go in the boys’ 1,600-meter seeded event at the Orange County Championships, Spencer Keith tripped while in fifth place, losing nine spots.

The senior bounced back later, though.

Keith went on to win the 3,200, recording a personal-best time of 9 minutes, 16.75 seconds at the meet at Mission Viejo High on Saturday.

“He finished very strong after the spill,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said of Keith, who took 14th in the 1,600 in 4:24.54, which is also a personal record.

Corona del Mar’s Matt Hurst sprinted to victory in the boys’ 400 in 48.36 seconds, giving the area a pair of first-place finishers. A handful of local boys and girls medaled at the OC Championships, finishing in the top eight in their respective events.

Hurst, who’s bound for Harvard, placed fifth in the 200 (21.86). The senior also anchored CdM’s 4x100 relay, which included Sutton Barbato, Cole Martin and Danny Geiger, to eighth place (43.62).

Other local standout boys included Costa Mesa senior Quinton Bell, a runner-up finisher in the 100 (10.71) and fourth-place finisher in the 200 (21.67). Corona del Mar’s Alex Wilde and Sage Hill’s CJ McCord finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the high jump.

Wilde, a senior, cleared 6 feet, 6 inches, while McCord, a junior, hit 6-4. Last week, McCord produced a 6-9, the state’s No. 2 mark, at the Ocean View Small Schools Invitational.

“[McCord] personally was disappointed, but I just think it’s just a hard place to jump,” said Sage Hill Coach Darrien Burwell, referring to high jumpers having to sprint on part of the Mission Viejo football field’s turf before taking off on the track. “It just was not his day today.”

Kavi Sakraney, a Sage Hill senior, placed ninth (6-2), one spot from medaling.

In the girls’ meet, Estancia’s Persis Williams-Mensah finished fifth in the 100 in 12.67 and 13th in the 200 in 26.81, while CdM’s Emma Kratzberg was third in the 300 hurdles in 45.79 and fifth in the 100 hurdles in 15.82.

CdM’s Asha Hardy was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-4, and CdM’s Tess St. Geme was eighth in the 1,600 rated event in 5:20.64.

Newport Harbor’s Hope Bender stood out in the 400 (14th, 1:00.23) and 200 (15th, 26.88) sprints, as did Erin Barth in the 1,600 seeded event with a 13th place showing (5:08.46).

The rest of the girls’ results are as follows: CdM’s Maria King (shotput, 11th, 32-5), Newport Harbor’s Grace Clemence (pole vault, 13th, 9-9), CdM’s Hannah Bagdasar (discus throw, 17th,103-7), Newport Harbor’s Katelyn Mead (800, 22nd, 2:26.21), CdM’s Ellen Naruse, (1,600 rated, 24th, 5:38.14), CdM’s Elin Wolker (800, 31st, 2:28.36), CdM’s Sophie Shambrook (100 hurdles, 33rd, 18.67), and Costa Mesa’s Jocelyn Gutierrez (800, 44th, 2:35.28).

Newport Harbor’s Stephen Mantei went No. 10 in both the shotput (50 1/2) and discus (151-3). Corona del Mar’s Giovanni Gentosi was 13th in the shotput (46-11 1/2).

In the boys’ pole vault, CdM’s Anthony Cappel-West and Newport Harbor’s Kyle Fegan shared 11th at 12 feet.
