High School Roundup: CdM baseball earns big win

Corona del Mar 8, Woodbridge 2

Freshman Chazz Martinez pitched six innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out one and walking three in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League game Friday.

Tommy Paoletti finished the game with one inning and allowed one hit.

Kevin McCarthy went two for three with three runs batted in, Martinez was two for three with two RBIs, Robby Hurst was two for three with an RBI and Teddy Stuka was two for three. Nick Premer and Preston Hartsell each had RBIs for CdM (14-6, 6-3 in league), which is alone in second place in the PCL, one game behind Beckman.

The Sea Kings went up two games on Woodbridge and gained the tiebreaker.

CdM plays at University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 9, Calvary Chapel Downey 1

Brett Super went three for four with three RBIs for the Lightning in the Academy League game Friday.

Conner Bock had an RBI triple for Sage Hill (13-6, 8-0 in league).

Parker Reposa got his fourth win of the year giving up just three hits and no runs over four innings, while Bock handled the final three innings yielding one run with five strikeouts.

Sage started the week ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 6, while division rival Crean Lutheran was No. 1. However, Crean lost to Oxford Academy on Tuesday to drop to second place in league.

Sage plays at Crean on Tuesday.

Marina 4, Newport Harbor 1

Jake Genova hit a solo home run for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Friday.

Rigsby Duncan went two for three and Josh Spicer was one for three for Newport Harbor.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 8, Los Alamitos 7

Alex Fuller scored three goals to help the Sailors win their seventh straight and kept them undefeated in the Sunset League at 6-0.

Dane Flinn Chandler Pearce, Joe Fuller (one assist) and Wyatt De Vine scored one goal each. Joe Fuller had one assist for Newport Harbor (9-6).

The Newport Harbor defense was led by Liam Whelan who had seven takeaways, four ground balls, and one knock down. Additional defensive effort was provided by; Blake Lenk with two takeaways, three ground balls, and one knock down; Cory Robertson with two takeaways, two ground balls, and one knockdown; Ryan Simons with three takeaways and two ground balls; Byron Guitierrrez with one takeaway, and four ground balls; and PJ Steiner with three takeaways and two ground balls; and Alex Pearce with two takeaways and two ground balls.

John Jasper had a strong night in the goal for Newport Harbor with eight saves and two takeaways, one of those coming at a key point in the fourth quarter as Los Al was trying to make a comeback.

Newport Harbor needs one victory in its last two league games to wrap up its first Sunset League boys’ lacrosse title.
