Five Lions lauded in softball

Vanguard University junior first baseman Brittney Boggs is a repeat honoree on the All-Golden State Athletic Conference softball team to lead five Lions selected by coaches.

Boggs leads the Lions (30-20, 10-10 in conference) heading into the GSAC Tournament, in which they open Thursday against Hope International at Concordia University at 9:30 a.m., with six home runs, 33 runs batted in and 12 doubles. She is hitting .360.

Breanne Gomez, a junior catcher, earned her second All-GSAC recognition, having been honored as a freshman in 2012. Gomez is batting .365 with one homer and 20 RBIs.

Junior outfielder Taylor Hallahan leads Vanguard regulars in batting average (.371), hits (65), runs (43) and stolen bases (14 in 16 attempts). She, like Boggs, has started all 50 games for the Lions, who finished fourth in the six-team conference.

Junior third baseman Shelby Kuryllo and junior pitcher Rachel Stalford round out the Vanguard honorees.

Kuryllo is hitting .356 with four homers, 31 RBIs, 10 doubles, two triples and a team-leading .548 slugging percentage.

Stalford is 15-6 in 21 starts, with 12 complete games and a 1.67 earned-run average. She has struck out 99 in 125 2/3 innings, while allowing 107 hits and walking 99. Opponents are batting .229 against her.

Vanguard is hitting .317 as a team, 61 points better than their opponents.

Concordia senior shortstop Jenna Jorgenson is the Player of the Year and Biola junior Roberta DePriest is the Pitcher of the Year.

Crystal Rosenthal (Concordia) is Coach of the Year.
