High School Roundup: Merrell breaks CdM girls’ swim record in 100 free

Eva Merrell set a new Corona del Mar High record in the 100-yard freestyle in her win against Beckman.

She finished in 50.86, which broke the former record set by Stephania Haralabidis in 2013.

Yesenia Villa won two events for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League meet Wednesday.

Villa won the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.68) and the 500 free (6:12.97).

Cialee Enslow won the 200 individual medley (2:46.40). Karlee Kistler won the 100 butterfly in 1:23.41. Bridgette Smitheram touched first in the 100 free (1:00.40). Kendra Ferguson earned first in the 100 backstroke (1:12.41) and Sarah Catania won the 100 breaststroke (1:27.71).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 7, St. Margaret’s 5

Senior Sherwin Gersten scored three goals and had three ground balls to help the Sea Kings improve to 13-0 on Wednesday.

Junior Stephen Von Der Ahe (one assist, one ground ball) and seniors Max Kline (one ground ball), Niño Chavez and Ben Palitz scored one goal each.

Junior Jordan Greenhall had two assists and two ground balls, junior Jason Simaan won eight faceoffs and senior Hoyt Crance made six saves.

The Sea Kings defeated JSerra, 9-3, on Monday.

BOYS’ SWIM

Estancia 114, Godinez 49

Jason Chesemore, Cobi White and Chris DeFrenza won two events each and were on two winning relays each for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League meet Wednesday.

Chesemore won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 59.89 secnods and the 100 free in 53.82. White won the 200 individual medley (2:22.92) and 100 breaststroke (1:11.39). DeFrenza won the 100 butterfly (1:06.10) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.19)

Kent Lim took first in the 50 free in 53.82 and Gavin Kane touched first in the 500 free (5:37.35) for Estancia (4-7).

DeFrenza, White, Lim and Chesemore won the 200 medley relay in 1:54.38.

Lim, DeFrenza, White and Chesemore won the 200 free relay in 1:41.61.

Angel Rosado won two events for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League match Wednesday.

He won the 100 butterfly (58.91), and the 100 backstroke (1:01.68).

Augustus Cunningham (2:02.72 in the 200 freestyle ), James Severance (2:34.99 in the 200 individual medley), Jorge Miranda (24.87 in the 50 free), Jacob Peterson (54.26 in the 100 free), Raymond Andrade (5:45:33 in the 500 free and Nick Ly (1:10.15 in the 100 breaststroke) also won for Costa Mesa.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Josh Spicer went one for three with an RBI double for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.

Christian Watson doubled, while Luke Genova and Sean Korkmaz added one single each for Newport Harbor, which plays host to Marina Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Kennedy Mulvaney scored five goals for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.
