High School Roundup: Costa Mesa boys’ volleyball ends Laguna Beach sets streak

Laguna Beach def. Costa Mesa

LAGUNA BEACH — The Mustangs ended the Breakers’ six-year win streak in Orange Coast League sets, but the home team won, 22-25, 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10, Tuesday.

Laguna had won 161 sets in a row, dating back to April 28, 2009, according to Laguna Beach historian Frank Aronoff.

The Breakers were without starters Tyler Alter and Jack Burgi, Aronoff said.

Corona del Mar def. Irvine

Connor Deverian had nine kills in the Sea Kings’ 25-11, 25-16, 25-18 Pacific Coast League win Tuesday.

Finn Jeffrey (eight kills, four solo blocks, one block assist), Will Hunter (eight kills, four solo blocks, two block assists) and Austin Cottrell (10 digs) also contributed for CdM (17-5, 6-0 in league), which plays at Los Angeles Loyola on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.

St. Margaret’s def. Sage Hill

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Zach Drobenko had 15 kills for the Lightning in an Academy League match that host St. Margaret’s won, 25-14, 27-25, 25-16, on Tuesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 10, Marina 8

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Reese Stalder, bound for TCU, improved to 44-0 with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 sweep in the Sunset League match Tuesday.

He also swept in the Sailors’ 13-5 loss to Los Alamitoson Monday.

David Lee and Mark Schaefer swept, 7-6, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles, while David Schaefer and Andy Myers won 6-1, 6-1, and lost 6-7 at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (14-3, 5-2 in league), which is in sole possession of second placein the Sunset League.

BASEBALL

Estancia 19, Costa Mesa 2

Connor Brown earned the win, striking out 11 and giving up one earned run in five innings for the visiting Eagles, who won the Battle for the Bell rivalry on Tuesday.

Estancia won the first two games of the three-game Orange Coast League series against Costa Mesa. The archrivals play the final game at Estancia (6-12, 3-5 in league) on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Estancia’s Aaron Boaitey went three for three with a home run, four runs batted in and three runs.

Jeff Alai was two for three with two RBIs and a double for the Eagles, while Brown, Tyler Ross and Nick Torres had two hits apiece.

Corona del Mar 4, Woodbridge 1

IRVINE — Evan Larsen threw a complete-game, four-hitter with three strikeouts for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday at Windrow Park.

He also helped his caused by going three for three with two doubles and a run batted in.

Justin Hess added a double and two RBIs, while Preston Hartsell (RBI double) and Teddy Stuka had two hits each for CdM (13-6, 5-3 in league), which is alone in second place in the PCL.

The Sea Kings play host to Woodbridge Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 7, Downey Calvary Chapel 0

Brett Super struck out five and allowed three hits in five innings for the host Lightning, improving his record to 5-0 on Tuesday.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 poll, is 7-0 in Academy League play.

Super went one for two with two runs batted in and a walk.

Conner Bock was two for three with three RBIs and a triple.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 17, Woodbridge 10

IRVINE — Jensen Coop scored six goals for the Sea Kings in Monday’s Pacific Coast League road game.

Paige Nelson added three goals for CdM (8-5, 5-2 in league), and Kennedy Mulvaney had a goal, five assists and seven draw controls.

Hailey Neumann had five draw controls for the Sea Kings, who play at University on Wednesday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 16, Marina 3

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Alex Fuller recorded eight goals and an assist on the road Tuesday, keeping the Sailors undefeated in Sunset League play.

Joe Fuller had three goals and four assists for Newport Harbor (8-6, 5-0 in league), which has won six straight.

Goalies John Jasper, Jack Cornuke and Esteban Ortiz combined to hold Marina to three goals on a dozen shots.

PJ Steiner won 16 of 18 faceoffs.

The Sailors are at Los Alamitos on Friday at 6 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Estancia 202, Calvary Chapel 216

Brad Ehrhorn, Kobi Uta and Parker Ohland each shot three-over-par 39 to lead Estancia to its best team score of the season on its home course in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Cody Nelson (42) and Conner Gray (43) also scored for Estancia (11-5, 5-2 in league).

Woodbridge 187, Corona del Mar 194

Ian Fletcher and John Hong both shot two-over-par 37 for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club on Tuesday.

Tyler See and Ethan Wien each shot 39 and Bryan Hong 42 for CdM (4-3 in league).

SOFTBALL

Estancia 17, Laguna Beach 2

Maya Van Den Heever went three for four with a three-run home run for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.

Isabelle Morales went three for three with a walk. Freshman pitcher Brittany Walker struck out nine for Estancia (10-5, 2-1 in league).
